NIU Memorial Service Sunday at 7 p.m.

The following is an email sent by Cheryl Peck, UIS Director of Public Relations

From: Peck, Cheryl
Sent: Wednesday, February 20, 2008 3:33 PM
Subject: UIS community invited to view NIU Memorial Service Sunday at 7 p.m.

UIS is honored to be one of the public gathering places for the live broadcast of Northern Illinois University’s Memorial Service for the victims of the February 14 tragedy on campus. UIS students, faculty, staff, and alumni are invited to attend.

The broadcast of the service is scheduled for Sunday, February 24, 2008 beginning at 7:00 p.m. in Brookens Auditorium.

NIU asked UIS to host a public site for the memorial service especially so that NIU alumni and friends would have a place to gather.

“We will welcome all NIU alumni and those with ties to the university and encourage the members of our own campus community to join them in remembering the young people who died,” said Chancellor Richard Ringeisen. “What happened at NIU last week was a tragedy for all of us.”

The UIS Alumni Association and UIS Student Affairs Office will act as hosts for the evening. NIU also is making plans to stream the service live on its Web site, www.niu.edu.

Personal Reaction to NIU Shootings

Well, it’s Friday and I’m still shaky about the shootings at NIU. I graduated from Northern Illinois University 10 years ago and I haven’t thought much about my time there since but ever since hearing of the shootings yesterday afternoon I haven’t been able to think of much else. Cole Hall was a place that every student spent many hours in general studies classes and if someone wanted to do a lot of damage, I guess it was a good place to plan a thing like this. Hearing the names of the buildings and spaces of my college days all over the news has thrown me back to those days and to think of the bloodshed and horrible damage done there is heart wrenching! I was a student-athlete when at NIU and have received a couple emails letting me know that none of the people I know in the athletics department were hurt, although some were nearby and helped stabilize the injured and frightened. I don’t really have any way to end this note. I just wanted to share my thoughts on the events at NIU…

And of course, my thoughts and prayers go out to the families of the victims.
